ICSPAC's Purpose

To provide an effective information exchange and networking vehicle for NGOs and citizen organizations promoting sustainable production and consumption (SPAC) policies and practices.

The ICSPAC Approach

The coalition will build upon working relationships already established through the NGO Caucus on Sustainable Production and Consumption at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.  The coalition will also build upon relationships with NGOs and citizen groups engaged in more nationally-based campaigns as well as those working with other relevant agencies and fora, such as the OECD, UNEP and others.

Because sustainable production and consumption covers an extremely wide range of issues and concerns, the coalition will concentrate its initial activities on those priorities identified by participants at the "From Consumer Society to Sustainable Society" conference on SPAC held in Soesterberg, Netherlands in early 1999.  These priorities include:

  1. Commitment to developing National Policy Frameworks to promote sustainable production and consumption (including implementation of the revised UN Guidelines on Consumer Protection);

  2. Reforming destructive subsidies and public investment promoting unsustainable production and consumption;

  3. Promoting citizen access to meaningful information, while challenging irresponsible sources of disinformation, such as promotion of unsustainable consumption values and habits to children;

  4. Encouraging producer responsibility and corporate accountability.
